Keeping your makeup brushes clean is essential for clear skin and flawless makeup application. However, if you’re like most people, washing your brushes regularly isn’t at the top of your to-do list.
I recently read Atomic Habits by James Clear and his whole premise is to “habit stack” - add one habit to another to remind you to do it, which builds good habits. Here’s an example, I added “resetting” my living room to my habit of loading the dishwasher before bed. Now when I get up in the morning my kitchen is clean AND my living room is tidy. It makes every day feel like a fresh start and I love it.
Why Habit Stacking Can Help You Clean Your Makeup Brushes
Why am I telling you this? Because you can use this trick to remember to wash your makeup brushes. I’m going to go ahead and guess that you’re not washing your brushes very often and that’s ok, I get it. It isn’t the most fun chore on your to-do list. As a professional makeup artist I have to wash upwards of 50-100 brushes a week and I deeply wish elves would wash them while I sleep, but alas….
Linking the task to a recurring event, like paying your rent, settling your credit card bill, or another regular monthly activity, is an effective way to remember it. It could be when you start a new pack of birth control or receive your paycheck. Just ensure it’s tied to something that happens consistently to trigger your memory.
Now that you’re committed to washing them monthly, here are my tips for keeping your brushes clean, well-maintained, and lasting a lifetime.
Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes
1. WASH
- Use hot water, as it helps break down makeup residue, oils, and dirt.
- Hold the brush under running water, ensuring the bristles are fully soaked.
2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT BRUSH CLEANER
Opt for a high-quality brush cleanser, such as:
- Takeda Brush Purely Soap (gentle yet effective for deep cleaning)
3. THE FIRST CLEANSE
- Wet your brush and swirl it onto the bar of soap.
- Make sure the bristles are thoroughly coated. This helps break down product buildup.
4. RINSE WELL
- Run the brush under warm water until the soap is completely washed away.
5. DOUBLE CLEANSE FOR DEEP CLEANING
- Repeat the washing process to remove any lingering debris or oils.
- Consider using an antibacterial cleanser for an extra deep clean.
6. FINAL RINSE
- Rinse the brush under warm water again to ensure no product residue remains.
7. REMOVE EXCESS WATER
- Gently squeeze out any remaining water from the bristles.
- Be careful not to tug or pull on the brush hairs. Water can loosen glue so you want to treat them gently.
8. DRYING YOUR BRUSHES THE RIGHT WAY
- Lay your brushes flat on a towel with the bristles hanging over the counter edge.
- Avoid drying them upright in a cup, as water can seep into the ferrule, loosening the glue and causing shedding.
- Let them dry overnight (in colder climates, it may take up to 24 hours).
Pro Tip: Investing in high-quality brushes like the RÓEN Everything Powder Brush or Jo Leversuch Untitled No.1 Multi-Use Powder Brush will make a difference in your makeup application and longevity.
WHY CLEANING YOUR BRUSHES IS IMPORTANT
Dirty makeup brushes harbor bacteria, leading to clogged pores, breakouts, and even skin infections. Keeping your brushes clean means:
- Fewer breakouts: Bacteria-free brushes help prevent acne.
- Better makeup application: Clean brushes ensure smooth, even coverage.
- Longer brush lifespan: Proper care keeps your investment intact for years.
“Brushes are an expensive investment. Take care of them and they can last forever. Neglect them and they’ll fall apart.”
